Why is a TV Show about the Past of Work this Summer’s Streaming Sensation?
Like millions of other people, my wife and I just binge watched Suits on Netflix. There are eight seasons streaming on that platform and we got through seven of the eight.
The performances and storylines are excellent. Plus, one of the stars married her prince IRL so the series has that going for it.
But I am most struck by the fact that Suits glorifies a style of work and workplace that the pandemic rendered obsolete.
Even my friends and acquaintances in the legal profession, Suits’ space, have since made work a wonderful part of their day doing other wonderful things, and not the all-consuming time-suck of a day (a work fit).
Do we miss wearing our expensive business suits at glass encased offices that no one ever seemed to leave?
The cast of Suits dressed impeccably. That is for sure.
But the characters in Suits glorified an old and worn-out model for career success: never take your eyes [off of] the prize (work and career), never have a life outside of work and workplace.
Never leave the building.
